Riken Yamamoto is well-known as an architect, but also has a background as a historian. He studied architectural history during his university and graduate school years. Subsequently, he embarked on research trips around the Mediterranean region, Central and South America, the Middle East, and India and Nepal. Yamamoto’s academic background also includes research on housing and housing complexes at the University of Tokyo under the guidance of Hiroshi Hara.
In this book, Yamamoto questions the essential relationship between public and private spaces, using his hands-on architectural experiences and knowledge. He reflects on urban space in ancient Greece, Rome, medieval Europe, and the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, while also exploring the distinctiveness of European society. How did this long-standing European tradition give rise to totalitarian states? Why did it create figures like Eichmann? These questions, raised by Hannah Arendt, inspired Yamamoto’s search for answers through architecture.
The Space of Power, The Power of Space is a hopeful reflection on the future of architecture, shaped by Yamamoto
